Jeep joins the Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) club in a big way for 2021, launching the Wrangler 4xe. The Wrangler has long represented the essence of the Jeep brand, blending off-road capability and open-air motoring possibilities, so Jeep was careful to ensure that the hybridization compliments, rather than dominates the Wrangler's personality. The 4xe powertrain combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a pair of electric motors, a motor-generator that replaces the alternator and a second, larger motor in the driveline, that together make a welcome 375-horsepower and an impressive 470 pound-feet of torque. There are no asterisks limiting the Wrangler 4xe PHEV's ability to do what the Wrangler was designed to, namely tackle rough terrain and induce smiles; consider the improved efficiency and green awareness a bonus. The new 4xe comes only in the four-door configuration, so there's no choosing the more compact two-door Wrangler if you want hybrid power under the stubby hood. We're team Rubicon here, you get front and rear locking differentials, a 4.10:1 axle ratio (standard is 3.73:1), electronically operated front sway bar disconnect, rock rails a choice of either the Rock-Trac NV241 transfer case or a full-time, shift-on-the-fly transfer case with a 4:1 low-gear ratio. In our testing, the Rubicon 4xe hybrid dashed to 60 mph in remarkable-for-a-Wrangler 5.2 seconds, nearly an entire second quicker than the 6.1-second time posted by a base two-door Wrangler Sport with the V-6 and the six-speed manual transmission. The 4xe was nearly two seconds quicker than a well-equipped, gas V-6, four-door Sahara model with the automatic transmission. A commanding view of the roador trailmakes for easy maneuverability. The 2021 Wrangler 4xe includes air conditioning and a comprehensive infotainment package running the intuitive Uconnect 4C interface on an 8.4-inch touchscreen.
